0.96 Inch OLED Display Module I2C SSD1306 128x64

The SSD1306 0.96-inch OLED is the most popular small display in the maker world, and for good reason. At under $8, it adds visual output to any project with just 4 wires.

The 128x64 pixel resolution is surprisingly readable for its size. Text, icons, sensor readings, and simple graphics render with excellent contrast thanks to the self-emitting OLED technology — no backlight needed. This also means true blacks and great viewing angles up to 160 degrees.

I2C communication keeps wiring minimal: VCC, GND, SDA, SCL. The Adafruit SSD1306 and U8g2 libraries make it trivial to display text, draw shapes, and render bitmaps. Both libraries work across Arduino, ESP32, and STM32 platforms.

Power consumption is modest at around 20mA with a full screen, dropping significantly with fewer lit pixels. For battery projects, you can implement screen timeout to extend runtime.

The main limitation is size. At 0.96 inches, it's best for displaying 3-4 lines of text or simple status information. For more complex UIs, step up to a 1.3-inch SH1106 or a TFT display.
