“The NEMA 17 stepper is the reliable precision motor for CNC and robotics. Proven, affordable, and universally supported by drivers and software.”
Our Review
The NEMA 17 stepper motor is the backbone of CNC machines, 3D printers, and precision robotics. With 200 steps per revolution (1.8 degrees) and 40Ncm holding torque, it provides the precision and power needed for controlled motion.
Paired with a stepper driver like the A4988 or TMC2209, the motor provides smooth, precise motion without feedback encoders. Microstepping (1/16 or 1/32) increases effective resolution to 3200 or 6400 steps per revolution — more than enough for most applications.
The bipolar 4-wire configuration is straightforward with modern stepper drivers. Just connect the two coil pairs, set the current limit to 1.5A, and you're running. The AccelStepper library handles acceleration profiles for smooth starts and stops.
Holding torque of 40Ncm is adequate for belt-driven systems and light lead screw applications. For heavier loads, step up to a higher-torque NEMA 17 (60Ncm+) or a NEMA 23.
Heat management matters at full current. The motor will run warm at 1.5A — this is normal for stepper motors. Reducing current when stationary and using a heatsink extends lifetime.
What We Like
- Precise 1.8-degree stepping without encoders
- Standard NEMA 17 mount fits most CNC/printer frames
- Affordable and widely available
Watch Out For
- Runs warm at full rated current
- Torque drops off at higher speeds
- Requires stepper driver board (not included)
