“The Jetson Nano democratizes edge AI. For computer vision and ML inference in robotics, nothing else comes close at this price point.”
Our Review
The NVIDIA Jetson Nano is the gateway to edge AI computing. With a 128-core Maxwell GPU capable of 472 GFLOPS, it brings real neural network inference to a credit-card sized board.
For computer vision projects, the Jetson Nano is transformative. It runs TensorFlow, PyTorch, and ONNX models with GPU acceleration, enabling real-time object detection (YOLO, SSD), image classification, and pose estimation at usable framerates. The NVIDIA JetPack SDK provides optimized libraries and pre-trained models to get started quickly.
The quad-core ARM A57 handles general Linux tasks while the GPU crunches neural networks in parallel. 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM is adequate for most inference workloads, though training is limited to small models.
The 40-pin GPIO header maintains compatibility with many Raspberry Pi HATs and provides I2C, SPI, UART, and PWM for sensor integration. CSI camera connectors support Raspberry Pi cameras and stereo vision setups.
Power management is important — the board draws up to 10W under full GPU load. A quality 5V 4A power supply is essential. The 5W mode extends battery life for mobile robotics applications at the cost of performance.
